Jessie, une jeune fille candide, décide de quitter sa petite ville natale du Texas pour New York, et commencer ainsi une vie beaucoup plus mouvementée ! Très vite, elle se retrouve dans un appartement à plusieurs millions de dollars, en tant que nounou de 4 enfants d’un couple new-yorkais très influent ; elle doit également cohabiter avec l’un de leurs amis imaginaires (Millie la sirène) et un lézard de compagnie de 2 mètres de long. Alors qu’elle tente de gérer le quotidien, Jessie trouve du soutien auprès de Bertram, le majordome réservé, et Tony, le jeune et séduisant portier.
